MAX Case Certifications Explained: IP67, MIL-STD-810, STANAG 4280, ATA 300 & UN 4H2
Partager
Every MAX case by Panaro carries a stack of international certifications. They are not marketing badges — each one is a defined, testable standard. Here is what IP67, MIL-STD-810, STANAG 4280, ATA 300 and UN 4H2 actually mean, and why they matter when you choose a waterproof protective case.
IP67 — fully dust-tight and waterproof
IP67 is an International Protection (Ingress Protection) rating. The first digit, 6, means the case is completely dust-tight. The second digit, 7, means it withstands temporary immersion in water up to 1 metre deep for 30 minutes. In practice an IP67 MAX case shrugs off rain, dust, mud and a brief drop into water. An automatic pressure-equalisation valve balances the air pressure after altitude or temperature changes while keeping the seal watertight.
Note: the recycled EKO series by Panaro is rated IP65 (dust-tight and protected against water jets), not IP67.
MIL-STD-810 — the environmental durability standard
MIL-STD-810 is the US Department of Defense method for testing how equipment survives real-world environmental stress: shock, vibration, drops, and temperature extremes. MAX cases are built and tested to MIL-STD-810, which is what people usually mean by “military grade.” The result is a case that keeps protecting its contents through transport shocks, sustained vibration and temperatures from −40 °C to +80 °C.
STANAG 4280 & DEF STAN 81-41 — NATO packaging levels
STANAG 4280 (NATO) and DEF STAN 81-41 (UK Ministry of Defence) define standardised levels of protective packaging for military logistics. Meeting them means a MAX case is accepted for defence supply chains where packaging performance is specified, not optional.
ATA 300 — ready for repeated air freight
ATA Spec 300 is the Air Transport Association standard for reusable shipping containers. MAX cases meet ATA 300 Category I, designed to survive 100+ trips through the air-freight system — the benchmark for cases that fly again and again rather than once.
UN 4H2 — approved for dangerous goods
UN 4H2 is the United Nations packaging code for a solid plastic box certified to carry dangerous goods. For MAX cases this includes the safe transport of lithium-ion batteries — increasingly important for drone, camera, medical and field-electronics crews.
Certifications at a glance
| Standard | What it certifies | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| IP67 | Dust-tight; waterproof to 1 m for 30 min | Rain, dust, mud and brief submersion are no problem |
| MIL-STD-810 | Shock, vibration, drop & temperature testing | Survives rough transport and −40 to +80 °C |
| STANAG 4280 | NATO protective-packaging levels | Accepted in defence/military logistics |
| ATA 300 | Reusable air-freight container (Cat. I, 100+ trips) | Built for repeated flying, not single use |
| UN 4H2 | Solid plastic box for dangerous goods | Approved to ship lithium-ion batteries |

Frequently asked questions
What does IP67 actually mean?
The 6 means fully dust-tight; the 7 means the case withstands immersion in water up to 1 metre deep for 30 minutes. It protects against rain, dust and brief submersion.
Is MIL-STD-810 the same as military grade?
Yes — military grade usually refers to MIL-STD-810, the US military method for testing shock, vibration, drop and temperature resistance. MAX cases are tested to it.
Can I take a MAX case on a plane?
MAX cases meet ATA 300 Category I for repeated air freight and include an automatic pressure-equalisation valve, so they handle the pressure changes of flying. Always check your airline's size and weight rules for cabin or checked baggage.
Can I ship lithium-ion batteries in a MAX case?
MAX cases are UN 4H2 certified for the transport of dangerous goods, including lithium-ion batteries. Follow the applicable dangerous-goods regulations for your shipment.
Are EKO cases also IP67?
No. The recycled EKO series is rated IP65 (dust-tight and protected against water jets). The standard MAX line is IP67 (immersion-proof).
Are MAX cases made in Italy?
Yes. MAX cases are manufactured 100% in Italy by Plastica Panaro. Case Planet ships them across Europe from Germany, usually within 24 hours.
